The Truth About Weight Loss Supplements

Weight loss supplements are a $30 billion a year industry that produce huge profits for manufacturers by promising big results to customers. But these promises don't always match up with the results of the products.

First, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates supplements in general as "food" and that means that supplements aren't held to a very high standard. It's counterintuitive because most supplements promise medication-like results but this oversight loophole allows supplement manufacturers to promise customers the world and then deliver nothing.

Importantly, because supplements are regulated as "food" by the FDA, supplements aren't tested before they hit the market. This is a huge problem because it allows supplement manufacturers to make unsubstantiated claims on their labels and in their advertisements.

Because they aren't tested, many supplement manufacturers get away with including impure ingredients in their products that can reduce any positive impact of the supplement and even introduce some negative effects. The lack of oversight in the supplement industry means that we don't know the full effects of these impurities.

Of course, such impurities as well as the misapplication of intentional ingredients can cause a number of health problems. FDA investigations revealed a number of weight loss supplements that were laced with prescription medications such as laxatives, anti-seizure medication and diuretics.

Such tainted products can cause problems for people who are already taking such prescription medications because it would double or triple their current doses. This can lead to unforeseen health complications and many tainted weight loss supplements have been linked to seizures, sudden drops in blood pressure and other health issues.

Even if supplements were safely regulated, one thing is clear: Weight loss supplements do not produce long-term results even when they work as intended. Depending on their ingredients, some supplements produce short-term results. However, these results are fleeting because supplements don't initiate the positive lifestyle changes needed to make weight loss permanent.

Weight loss supplements are at best a quick fix to what is really a long-term weight problem. Instead of seeking out the quick fix, design your own workout regimen and start planning healthy, low-calorie meals.

These two things can be done for free; you don't need a gym membership to workout and you don't need a dietitian to tell you which foods are bad for you and which are not. Indeed, there are all sorts of compound bodyweight exercises that you can perform in your home without any specialized equipment. From push-ups to sit-ups, you can start losing weight without spending money on pills.

In short, money spent on weight loss supplements would be better spent on a gym membership or healthier foods. At worst, weight loss supplements can cause health problems and at best they're a quick fix to a long-term problem.

The focus in weight loss has to be on lifestyle changes that will produce long-term results and put you at less risk than weight loss supplements. Save yourself the money; avoid the unregulated supplements.
